TI-Raleigh Team:
The TI-Raleigh Team competed from 1974 through 1983 and this is a replica of the iconic team bicycle built in Raleigh’s Specialist Bicycle Development Unit (SBDU) in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England, using Reynolds 753 tubing and finished in the team colours of red with black and yellow. Reynolds were a division of TI and the Raleigh team was the first to get this tubing.
The team was stunningly successful in the classics and stage races, with a Tour de France victory by Joop Zoetemelk in 1980. On the road, World Championships were won by Gerrie Knetemann and Jan Raas, and on the track by Roy Schuiten and Bert Oosterbosch.
Personal Comments:
the subject machine is in its original finish and was acquired a few years ago with only a 100 or so miles on it. It was substantially as seen here except that it was fitted with totally inappropriate Shimano brakes and seat post which have been changed for the correct Campagnolo Super Record parts. There has been no other attempt to bring this bicycle to “team specification”. My apologies for the quality of the photos – bright sunshine and a crumbling 200 year-old wall do not make the ideal environment.
